Wolfsthurn Castle

Not far above our village, on the hillside, there is a small castle called Wolfsthurn. It was probably built in the early 13th century by the Lords of Andriano. The castle consists of a low keep with a pyramid roof, a residential and housekeeping wing, a circular wall and a gate wall with swallowtail merlons.

About 150 years ago, the castle fell into ruin but was then renovated and provided with roofs. It got its name from the noble family Wölfe von Mareit, who purchased it in the 15th century.

When you walk up the short pretty forest trail towards the castle (the castle is private property and cannot be visited), you will encounter some old masonry in the bushes not far above the castle. These are the only remains of a small castle that was probably built in the 12th century, of which we otherwise know virtually nothing, unless, as some people suspect, these are the remains of the documented Burg Andrian/Castel d’Andriano, which was already destroyed around 1275.
